PDC Rock Bit Cutters
A PDC rock bit shears and scrapes rock with polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutters fixed to its blades. Field Diamond Limited supplies verified PDC cutters — conical, step, square, 3D, 4D and bullet shapes — for oil and gas, mining, water well, geothermal and horizontal directional drilling, with tested wear, impact and thermal performance and custom grades.
Cutter Placement & Formation Guide
PDC rock bit cutters are not interchangeable: the diamond-layer geometry sets how a cutter loads, shears and clears rock. Use this table to shortlist the right shape before you request a quote.
| Cutter shape | Bit position | Best formation / duty |
|---|---|---|
| Коническая | Back / damping cutter | Extremely hard rock, granite, coal mining and tunnel construction |
| 3D | Primary cutter | Soft plastic clay, complex geology and deep-sea drilling |
| 4D | Primary / pilot cutter | Hard interbedded, directional and ultra-deep wells |
| Bullet | Primary cutter | DTH hammer in abrasive medium-hard rock; high-ROP horizontal wells |
| Шаг | Primary cutter | Pavement and stone cutting (bolt fixation) |
| Square | Gauge cutter | Granite and marble chain-saw cutting |
Verified Wear, Impact & Thermal Data
Standard flat cutters OGF1308, OGF1313 and OGF1613 are tested under identical conditions — VTL granite wear, drop-weight impact and thermal cycling — so you can compare grades against real data.
| Модель | VTL granite wear (cut length) | Drop-weight impact (cumulative) | Thermal cycle (surface crack) |
|---|---|---|---|
| OGF1308 | 2.99 km over 6.86 turns | 3,810 J (60–90 J × 10) | 755–805 °C cyclic |
| OGF1313 | 3.90 km over 9 turns | 3,810 J (60–90 J × 10) | 755–805 °C cyclic |
| OGF1613 | 3.48 km over 8 turns | 3,540 J (60–90 J) | 755–805 °C cyclic |
Test basis: VTL dry turning on granite at 1.25 mm depth of cut and 107 m/min; Cr12MoV drop-weight anvil. Dimensional tolerance for the 1313 sample: diameter 13.44 ±0.03 mm, total height 13.20 ±0.10 mm.

CATEGORY INTRODUCTION & BUYER PAIN POINTS
Understand how the diamond-layer shape, size, grade and bit position determine performance before you shortlist a model.
A PDC rock bit is a fixed-cutter drill bit whose cutting structure is made of polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutters. As the bit rotates, the cutters shear and scrape rock. PDC rock bits are used in oil and gas, mining, water well, geothermal and horizontal directional drilling; the cutter shape, size, grade and placement determine how the bit performs in a given formation.
Buyers face premature cutter wear, edge chipping and thermal damage in abrasive or interbedded formations, lost cutters from weak brazing or pocket support, and unclear grade-to-formation matching. Choosing the wrong cutter shape or grade raises bit trips, lowers rate of penetration and increases cost per meter.
PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS DUTY
Translate the rock-drilling duty into four measurable requirements your cutter supplier must meet.
Cutters absorb axial weight-on-bit and torque under shock and vibration. Grades are verified by drop-weight impact (60–90 J) and VTL granite wear tests before shipment.
High-abrasion rock, interbedded strata, hard granite and quartzite, and elevated downhole temperature. Cobalt-removed (leached) and thermal-stable grades extend life in these conditions.
Diameter tolerance ±0.03 mm and height ±0.10 mm. Cutters braze to the bit pocket with Bag-24 silver alloy at 670–730 °C; step cutters use bolt fixation instead of brazing.
E, P and T grade series, 30° large chamfer and cobalt-removal options, ISO 9001:2015 quality system, inspection reports and batch traceability.
RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS / MODELS
These PDC cutters are the cutting elements built into rock bits. Models differ by diamond-layer geometry — conical, step, square, 3D, 4D and bullet — which sets each cutter's bit position and formation suitability.

For extremely hard formations, granite, coal mining and tunnel construction as a shock-absorbing back cutter.

For pavement and stone cutting with bolt fixation for fast cutter replacement.

For granite and marble chain-saw cutting with multi-edge anti-rotational wear resistance.

For complex geology, soft plastic clay and deep-sea drilling as a primary cutter.

For hard interbedded formations, directional and ultra-deep wells as a primary or pilot cutter.

For DTH hammer bits in abrasive medium-hard formations and high-ROP horizontal drilling.

APPLICATION PAIN POINTS & SOLUTIONS
Each recommended shape answers a specific failure mode with a verified specification response.
Why it matters: In hard, abrasive formations, main cutters take impact that chips edges and stalls the rate of penetration. Specification response: The conical diamond layer concentrates axial load and absorbs shock as a back or damping cutter, and lasts 5–10 times longer than carbide equivalents in demanding rock.
Why it matters: Hard interbedded layers trigger stick-slip vibration and bit balling, which overheat and break cutters. Specification response: The asymmetric 4D face and compound curved surface suppress stick-slip and improve cuttings evacuation for higher rates of penetration in directional and ultra-deep wells.
Why it matters: In DTH hammers drilling abrasive medium-hard rock, carbide buttons wear and blunt quickly. Specification response: The streamlined bullet diamond layer reduces drilling resistance and lasts 5–10 times longer than carbide buttons in high-silica formations.

Answers to the questions buyers ask before ordering rock bit cutters.
Tell us the bit type, cutter position (primary, back or gauge) and formation. Conical cutters suit hard rock back and damping positions, 3D and 4D shapes suit main cutting in complex and interbedded strata, bullet cutters suit DTH abrasive formations, and step and square cutters suit stone and pavement cutting. An engineer confirms the fit from your bit drawing and formation data.
Samples are available for qualified buyers and can be field-tested with your bit manufacturer. Standard cutters ship in 7–15 days depending on model and quantity; customized shapes and grades may extend the lead time.
E series (2.0 mm diamond layer) suits gauge, edge and back cutters on cost-sensitive jobs; P series (2.8 mm) is the premium primary-cutter grade for abrasive formations; T series (2.8 mm) is the top grade for the hardest, most abrasive duty. We confirm the grade against your formation and cutter position.
