PDC Rock Bit Cutters

Broca de PDC

A PDC rock bit shears and scrapes rock with polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutters fixed to its blades. Field Diamond Limited supplies verified PDC cutters — conical, step, square, 3D, 4D and bullet shapes — for oil and gas, mining, water well, geothermal and horizontal directional drilling, with tested wear, impact and thermal performance and custom grades.

Cutter Placement & Formation Guide

Match The Cutter Shape To The Bit Position And Formation.

PDC rock bit cutters are not interchangeable: the diamond-layer geometry sets how a cutter loads, shears and clears rock. Use this table to shortlist the right shape before you request a quote.

Verified Wear, Impact & Thermal Data

Check The Numbers Before You Commit To A Grade.

Standard flat cutters OGF1308, OGF1313 and OGF1613 are tested under identical conditions — VTL granite wear, drop-weight impact and thermal cycling — so you can compare grades against real data.

ModeloVTL granite wear (cut length)Drop-weight impact (cumulative)Thermal cycle (surface crack)
OGF13082.99 km over 6.86 turns3,810 J (60–90 J × 10)755–805 °C cyclic
OGF13133.90 km over 9 turns3,810 J (60–90 J × 10)755–805 °C cyclic
OGF16133.48 km over 8 turns3,540 J (60–90 J)755–805 °C cyclic

Test basis: VTL dry turning on granite at 1.25 mm depth of cut and 107 m/min; Cr12MoV drop-weight anvil. Dimensional tolerance for the 1313 sample: diameter 13.44 ±0.03 mm, total height 13.20 ±0.10 mm.

CATEGORY INTRODUCTION & BUYER PAIN POINTS

Understand The Category Before Comparing Models.

Understand how the diamond-layer shape, size, grade and bit position determine performance before you shortlist a model.

What a PDC rock bit is

A PDC rock bit is a fixed-cutter drill bit whose cutting structure is made of polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutters. As the bit rotates, the cutters shear and scrape rock. PDC rock bits are used in oil and gas, mining, water well, geothermal and horizontal directional drilling; the cutter shape, size, grade and placement determine how the bit performs in a given formation.

What goes wrong at the cutting edge

Buyers face premature cutter wear, edge chipping and thermal damage in abrasive or interbedded formations, lost cutters from weak brazing or pocket support, and unclear grade-to-formation matching. Choosing the wrong cutter shape or grade raises bit trips, lowers rate of penetration and increases cost per meter.

PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS DUTY

Translate The Operating Condition Into Measurable Requirements.

Translate the rock-drilling duty into four measurable requirements your cutter supplier must meet.

Impact and wear resistance

Cutters absorb axial weight-on-bit and torque under shock and vibration. Grades are verified by drop-weight impact (60–90 J) and VTL granite wear tests before shipment.

Environment and exposure

High-abrasion rock, interbedded strata, hard granite and quartzite, and elevated downhole temperature. Cobalt-removed (leached) and thermal-stable grades extend life in these conditions.

Fit, interface and standards

Diameter tolerance ±0.03 mm and height ±0.10 mm. Cutters braze to the bit pocket with Bag-24 silver alloy at 670–730 °C; step cutters use bolt fixation instead of brazing.

Commercial and compliance need

E, P and T grade series, 30° large chamfer and cobalt-removal options, ISO 9001:2015 quality system, inspection reports and batch traceability.

RECOMMENDED PRODUCTS / MODELS

Start With A Verified Fit, Then Confirm The Final Specification.

These PDC cutters are the cutting elements built into rock bits. Models differ by diamond-layer geometry — conical, step, square, 3D, 4D and bullet — which sets each cutter's bit position and formation suitability.

APPLICATION PAIN POINTS & SOLUTIONS

Connect Each Recommended Model To A Specific Failure Mode.

Each recommended shape answers a specific failure mode with a verified specification response.

Conical PDC Cutter · Hard-rock shock and vibration

Why it matters: In hard, abrasive formations, main cutters take impact that chips edges and stalls the rate of penetration. Specification response: The conical diamond layer concentrates axial load and absorbs shock as a back or damping cutter, and lasts 5–10 times longer than carbide equivalents in demanding rock.

4D Shaped PDC Cutter · Stick-slip and poor cuttings evacuation

Why it matters: Hard interbedded layers trigger stick-slip vibration and bit balling, which overheat and break cutters. Specification response: The asymmetric 4D face and compound curved surface suppress stick-slip and improve cuttings evacuation for higher rates of penetration in directional and ultra-deep wells.

Bullet Shaped PDC Cutter · Abrasive DTH formations

Why it matters: In DTH hammers drilling abrasive medium-hard rock, carbide buttons wear and blunt quickly. Specification response: The streamlined bullet diamond layer reduces drilling resistance and lasts 5–10 times longer than carbide buttons in high-silica formations.

FAQ

Questions Buyers Ask Before Ordering.

Answers to the questions buyers ask before ordering rock bit cutters.

Which PDC cutter shape fits my rock bit and formation?

Tell us the bit type, cutter position (primary, back or gauge) and formation. Conical cutters suit hard rock back and damping positions, 3D and 4D shapes suit main cutting in complex and interbedded strata, bullet cutters suit DTH abrasive formations, and step and square cutters suit stone and pavement cutting. An engineer confirms the fit from your bit drawing and formation data.

What is the MOQ, sample policy and lead time?

Samples are available for qualified buyers and can be field-tested with your bit manufacturer. Standard cutters ship in 7–15 days depending on model and quantity; customized shapes and grades may extend the lead time.

Which grade should I choose: E, P or T?

E series (2.0 mm diamond layer) suits gauge, edge and back cutters on cost-sensitive jobs; P series (2.8 mm) is the premium primary-cutter grade for abrasive formations; T series (2.8 mm) is the top grade for the hardest, most abrasive duty. We confirm the grade against your formation and cutter position.

Can you provide drawings, certificates or inspection reports?

Yes. We supply ISO 9001:2015 certification, dimensional inspection reports, wear, impact and thermal test data, and traceability records. Drawings and a non-disclosure agreement can be arranged before sampling or production.

Do you support non-standard customization?

Yes. We customize cutter shape, diamond-layer thickness, chamfer (including a 30° large chamfer), cobalt removal and dimensions to your bit structure and application. Send a drawing through the custom channel and we review feasibility, tooling and MOQ.
