PDC Cutter

Four PDC cutter profiles cover different working faces, drilling roles and published diameter ranges, from planar cutters for primary and gauge positions to dome elements for impact-exposed positions. The diamond table, carbide backing and contact geometry influence shearing, abrasion and impact behavior in changing formations. A PDC cutter is the composite cutting element mounted in a drill bit.

Cutter Shapes for Different Bit Positions

Product List

kingpdc offers four working-face geometries. The contact profile, bit position and published cutter diameter determine how each option fits the pocket and blade layout.

FamilyWorking profileTypical bit rolePublished diameter
FlatPlanar diamond facePrimary or gauge cutting8.00–19.05 mm (0.315–0.750 in)
Cutting edge shapedFlat face with inclined outer planeDirectional or gauge cutting13.44–19.05 mm (0.529–0.750 in)
Triangular shapedThree inclined facesPrimary cutting in hard or interbedded rock13.44–19.05 mm (0.529–0.750 in)
DomeRounded diamond facePrimary, back or gauge positions exposed to impact7.978–19.14 mm (0.314–0.754 in)

The detail pages show the available model codes and heights for each family. Diameter alone does not establish interchangeability: pocket dimensions and working-face orientation also matter.

Geometry, Formation and Impact

Product List

A PDC cutter has a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) table that shears rock and a tungsten carbide substrate that supports the table and provides a mounting base. The flat family offers a continuous planar edge. An inclined cutting edge changes contact at the outer contour, while the triangular profile presents three sloped faces to uneven rock.

The rounded dome spreads contact and impact over its curved face, making it a useful option where formation changes or abrasion expose a pointed edge to repeated shocks. Bit performance still depends on cutter placement, back rake, hydraulic cleaning and the formation; a shape name alone does not predict penetration rate.

Dimensional inspection checks diameter, height and chamfer. Material and service testing cover different risks: internal integrity, abrasion, impact and thermal cycling must be evaluated separately for the selected grade.

What a Drilling PDC Cutter Is

Product List

PDC means polycrystalline diamond compact. The cutter is a composite cutting element: a synthetic PCD diamond working layer bonded to a tougher tungsten carbide base. Several cutters are mounted on a drill bit body, where they shear rock as the bit rotates.

PCD names the diamond material; PDC names the mounted composite element. The bit adds blades, cutter pockets and fluid passages around those elements. Drilling cutters are separate from parking sensor hole-cutting tools.

Four PDC Cutter Families

This selection covers four drilling cutter profiles available from kingpdc: flat, cutting edge shaped, triangular shaped and dome. Their working faces and published diameters support different bit positions and rock conditions.

Questions Before Ordering

Answers about drawings, inspection and cutter terminology.

What information belongs on a cutter drawing?

A useful drawing identifies nominal diameter, total height, diamond-table height, chamfer, pocket fit and the intended bit position. A formation description helps select the working face.

Can one bit use different cutter shapes?

Yes. A bit can combine flat primary cutters with shaped or dome elements at selected positions when the pocket geometry and working profile are designed together.

How are cutter batches inspected?

A dimensional report can cover diameter, height and chamfer. Internal integrity, wear, impact and thermal tests are separate checks selected for the ordered grade.

What is the difference between PDC and PCD?

PCD is the polycrystalline diamond material. A PDC cutter combines a PCD working table with a tungsten carbide substrate as a mountable drilling component.

Can the working face be customized?

The drawing route accepts nonstandard diameter, height, chamfer and profile requests. A sample lot is planned before pilot or bulk production for a new geometry.
