A PDC cutter has a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) table that shears rock and a tungsten carbide substrate that supports the table and provides a mounting base. The flat family offers a continuous planar edge. An inclined cutting edge changes contact at the outer contour, while the triangular profile presents three sloped faces to uneven rock.
The rounded dome spreads contact and impact over its curved face, making it a useful option where formation changes or abrasion expose a pointed edge to repeated shocks. Bit performance still depends on cutter placement, back rake, hydraulic cleaning and the formation; a shape name alone does not predict penetration rate.
Dimensional inspection checks diameter, height and chamfer. Material and service testing cover different risks: internal integrity, abrasion, impact and thermal cycling must be evaluated separately for the selected grade.
PDC means polycrystalline diamond compact. The cutter is a composite cutting element: a synthetic PCD diamond working layer bonded to a tougher tungsten carbide base. Several cutters are mounted on a drill bit body, where they shear rock as the bit rotates.
PCD names the diamond material; PDC names the mounted composite element. The bit adds blades, cutter pockets and fluid passages around those elements. Drilling cutters are separate from parking sensor hole-cutting tools.
