Unlike single-crystal diamond with a continuous lattice, the grains in polycrystalline diamond are distributed in a random orientation. This structural feature makes it macroscopically avoid the tendency to fracture along a single cleavage plane, while being able to continue to bear the load by adjacent grains after local grain wear.<\/p>\n<p>In engineering practice, polycrystalline diamond does not usually appear as a standalone material, but is combined with a carbide matrix to form a composite cutting element. This complex consists of an upper polycrystalline diamond working layer and a lower tungsten-cobalt carbide matrix. The diamond layer is responsible for direct contact with the working object and provides wear resistance and cutting capabilities, while the carbide matrix is responsible for structural support, load transmission and tool body connection. It is this complementary structure that has enabled the application landscape of polycrystalline diamond to cover a variety of very different fields, from oil and gas drilling thousands of meters underground to precision machining.<\/p>\n<h2>Oil and Gas Drilling<\/h2>\n<p>In the field of oil and gas drilling, polycrystalline diamond composite cutting teeth are the most core working elements in fixed cutting tooth drill bits. As the drill bit rotates, cutting teeth fixed to the blade wings continuously remove bottom hole rock in a scraping and shearing manner, replacing the traditional roller drill bit&#8217;s rock breaking method that relies on rolling and crushing.<\/p>\n<p>The high hardness and wear resistance of the polycrystalline diamond layer enable the cutting teeth to maintain the cutting edge in highly abrasive formations, reducing the non-productive time of frequent drill down to change drill bits. At the same time, the randomly oriented grain structure reduces the risk of rapid wear of the material in specific directions, making the edge life of batch cutting teeth more predictable.<\/p>\n<p>The material formulations of the cutting teeth vary significantly for different drilling depths and formation conditions. Sandstone or other highly abrasive mineral formations with high quartz content prioritize the wear resistance level and effective diamond volume of the diamond layer; while complex formations containing gravel, cracks, or interbedded soft and hard layers require a balance between impact toughness and thermal stability. By adjusting the diamond particle size formulation, metal bond content, decobaltization treatment depth, and working edge chamfer design, the cutting teeth can achieve a reasonable trade-off between wear resistance, impact resistance, and thermal stability under specific working conditions.<\/p>\n<h2>Geological Exploration and Mine Drilling<\/h2>\n<p>The demand for polycrystalline diamond materials in geological exploration and mine drilling overlaps with and differs from that in oil and gas drilling. In core drilling for mineral exploration, polycrystalline diamond cutting teeth need to take into account both cutting efficiency and core protection; while in mine blasthole drilling and anchor drilling, cutting teeth often face higher impact loads and more complex rock formation changes.<\/p>\n<p>Polycrystalline diamond composites used in these scenarios typically feature a more conservative edge design, increasing chipping resistance by increasing chamfers or employing a profiled working surface. Some mining applications also use ridge-shaped cutting teeth, which use their raised cutting ridges to form stress concentration areas on the working surface, achieving effective intrusion in hard and brittle rock layers with small normal loads.<\/p>\n<h2>Water and geothermal well drilling<\/h2>\n<p>Water and geothermal well drilling place different technical requirements on polycrystalline diamond cutting teeth. Well drilling covers a wide stratigraphic sequence from loose alluvial deposits to hard bedrock, and the cutting teeth need to maintain stable cutting performance under alternating soft and hard working conditions. Geothermal wells place higher demands on the thermal stability of materials due to the high temperature environment \u2014\u2014under high temperature conditions, the residual cobalt in conventional cobalt-containing polycrystalline diamond may catalyze the conversion of diamond to non-diamond carbon, and the difference in thermal expansion between cobalt and diamond will induce internal stress. Therefore, thermally stable polycrystalline diamond elements that have been decobaltized are often used in geothermal applications to improve structural stability and wear resistance retention at high temperatures by removing part of the metal phase in the working area.<\/p>\n<h2>Horizontal directional drilling and trenchless engineering<\/h2>\n<p>Polycrystalline diamond cutting teeth are widely used in horizontal directional drilling tools in trenchless projects such as urban pipe laying and cable laying. This type of construction requires traversing a complex combination of strata including clay, sand, pebbles and rocks. Polycrystalline diamond cutting teeth rely on sharp edges to maintain intrusiveness and cutting efficiency in viscous soft formations, while relying on the material&#8217;s inherent hardness and impact resistance to reduce the risk of chipping when encountering pebbles or hard interlayers. Cutting teeth of different sizes, shapes and material grades can be combined on the same reamer or pilot drill to match load differences at different radial locations from the center to the outer diameter.<\/p>\n<h2>Stone Cutting and Road Milling<\/h2>\n<p>In the construction and infrastructure sectors, the application of polycrystalline diamond extends to natural stone processing and pavement milling operations. Polycrystalline diamond tools for stone cutting are commonly found in marble and granite mining, sheet sawing, and surface forming processes. By fitting a polycrystalline diamond tool holder or cutting teeth onto a circular saw blade or a rope saw, a long cutting edge life can be maintained in the continuous cutting of highly abrasive stone.<\/p>\n<p>Polycrystalline diamond cutting elements are used in pavement milling equipment to remove aged asphalt or concrete facings. The milling conditions are characterized by high abrasion, continuous impact and large amounts of dust, which requires that the polycrystalline diamond elements have both sufficient wear-resistant volume and a cutting edge support structure that can withstand periodic impact. Feder showcased polycrystalline diamond tool holders and cutting teeth for stone cutting at the 2025 Xiamen International Stone Exhibition, and held technical exchanges with stone industry practitioners from Brazil, India, Greece and Australia on high-end marble cutting and precision tool applications.<\/p>\n<h2>Industrial Cutting and Precision Machining<\/h2>\n<p>In the field of metal and non-metal precision machining, polycrystalline diamond tools are widely used in the cutting of non-ferrous metals, composite materials, laminates and hard plastics. Unlike polycrystalline diamond composite sheets for drilling, polycrystalline diamond tools for machining typically have thinner polycrystalline diamond layers and different matrix structures, and their cutting edges can be machined to finer surface qualities.<\/p>\n<p>Polycrystalline diamond exhibits significant wear resistance advantages when processing aluminum alloys, copper alloys, magnesium alloys and fiber-reinforced composites. The randomly oriented polycrystalline structure avoids the wear differences between single-crystal diamond in different crystal directions, making the tool life more consistent and predictable. However, it should be noted that polycrystalline diamond tools are generally not suitable for continuous high-speed cutting of iron-based materials because iron group metals promote chemical wear of diamond at high temperatures.<\/p>\n<h2>Other industrial applications<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to cutting tools, the largest application category, polycrystalline diamond has also entered other industrial scenarios in many forms. Polycrystalline diamond bearings utilize the high hardness, low friction and good heat conduction properties of the material to provide wear-resistant support in downhole power drilling tools and special rotating machinery. Polycrystalline diamond coating and surface modification techniques can impart diamond properties to larger workpiece surfaces. Polycrystalline diamond drawing dies utilize high wear-resistant holes to achieve stable size drawing and forming in metal wire production. In the fields of electronics and thermal management, chemical vapor deposition polycrystalline diamond is used as a heat dissipation substrate for high-power chips due to its extremely high thermal conductivity. However, this technical route belongs to a different category from sintered polycrystalline diamond in terms of material structure and properties.<\/p>\n<h2>How to choose the right polycrystalline diamond product for specific applications<\/h2>\n<p>The choice of application for polycrystalline diamond materials is not a simple &#8220;harder is better&#8221; judgment. Practical decisions need to take into account both the abrasiveness and hardness of the working object, whether the load type is steady shear or periodic impact, the operating temperature range and cooling conditions, the connection and installation method, and the acceptable failure mode.<\/p>\n<p>For working conditions where abrasive wear is the main life limit, priority should be paid to the wear resistance level and diamond volume fraction of the polycrystalline diamond layer; for working conditions with frequent impact, attention needs to be paid to fracture toughness, edge chamfer design and support conditions of cemented carbide matrix; for high-temperature environments, decobaltization solutions or thermally stable polycrystalline diamond routes should be considered. In any case, the performance of polycrystalline diamond composites is the result of the combined effects of diamond formulation, matrix material, interface structure, geometric design, post-processing and application parameters, and cannot be judged by a single indicator.<\/p>\n<p>When communicating with suppliers about selection, providing the lithological characteristics of the target formation, the range of working parameters, the failure modes of existing products and the expected improvement targets will help to obtain a more accurate matching plan.
